I’ve never worn an all white outfit before so I was thrilled when Calvin Klein approached me and asked if i’d be interested in styling their new limited edition collection. This is my second time collaborating with Calvin Klein you can see my first post here. This time it was something new and quite a challenge for me and I think trying new things is really important. The collection is inspired by retro-athletic pieces with a white on white logo (available here). The whole process inspired me to write this article, I want to give you my perspective on trying new things and how important they can be to our everyday lives.
Trying something new can be a scary thought but at one point everything you’ve ever done was ‘something new’. Your first day of school, the first time you rode a bike or the first time you ordered clothing online. Okay so some things are more daunting than others but if you stop and think about it, trying something new everyday can really help you understand yourself a whole lot more. Below I’ve put together 6 things to think about and hopefully inspire you to try something new.
Trying something new allows you to have more self confidence because you’ll know that you tried it. Whether you liked something or didn’t – it doesn’t really matter because you can be sure in yourself that you tried and you’ll come out at the end a more rounded version of yourself. Even if it’s the smallest of accomplishments like trying a new or unusual dish at a restaurant or trying on a new item of clothing in a colour you’ve never worn before – with experience of trying new things comes knowledge and with that knowledge comes empowerment. So why not empower yourself?
Time is precious
Time is singlehandedly the most valuable and luxurious thing that you possess. Money, clothing, tech, property can all be bought or sold but time you can never get back. So one thing that we shouldn’t do, is waste it. Don’t waste time staying in a job that you dislike, don’t waste time putting up with that one person you’d prefer to not be around and certainly don’t waste time waiting for something better to come along. I believe that anyone can do anything if they put their mind to it. I’m here doing the job of my dreams because I worked and still work damn hard, everyday ,non stop. I may be doing the job that I dreamed of but it’s only the beginning for me and I still have so much more to learn and accomplish. Time is incredibly precious and you only get one shot at life so dream big, work hard and you’ll get there one day. Don’t wait for things to happen to you, you have to make them happen for yourself.
Bravery makes me think about epic battles between heroes and villains, saving the world and all the connotations that come with being brave. However being brave doesn’t have to be so epic, life isn’t like the movies so being brave can definitely be shown in our day to day lives. For example bravery can range from standing up for yourself or to stop letting phrases like ‘I can’t’ hold you back. I’ve stood up for myself in the past in the past when I’ve felt mistreated or picked on and it’s little things like that, that fill you with self confidence. To know that you stood up for yourself no matter what is really empowering. You shouldn’t let anything or anyone fill you with fear, it’s your life so you really have to take charge.
Everyday we’re faced with new and exciting challenges, think of what you could really accomplish in a day and go for it. Make a list of things you want to get done and get stuck in. I constantly set myself unrealistic goals but this pushes me to increase my productivity and achieve more and more each day. As I mentioned earlier, phrases like ‘I Can’t’ hold a lot people back. It’s like a failsafe knee-jerk human response, if it’s a scary task or a seemingly impossible one the least you can do is try because if you try and fail you’ll know your limits. If you’ve never tried it then you’ll never know what you’re capable of.
Changing your Perspective
Perspective is important, at the end of the day we’re all just human beings no matter how intimidating someone is or how ‘important’ they are. We’re all equal and when we go out on a limb in one area of our lives it can give you a better perspective on what’s really important. Things that you took for granted before can be seen in a whole new light, lets say that you say ‘yes’ more in your career and really strive to become better. This might rejuvenate your appreciate for the smaller things in life, time with your family, seeing your friends, giving you a whole new perspective on what’s important.
It happens to us all, we get stuck in a rut. You get trapped into your routine, your monotonous daily rituals that after time seem to run like clockwork. Whilst these routines are important to us we also need to break out of them now and again, being trapped in the same routine often gives me a mental block. I need to be kept on my toes at all times as that’s when I’m more creative, I come up with ideas, think of new ways of doing things, create different content. Even small things that you can do to mix up your daily routine like try going a new way to work, meet up with an old friend you haven’t seen in awhile or change what you have for breakfast.
