A lot of you guys are always asking me how I afford new clothes, how I earn money through blogging etc it’s definitely not an easy journey, it requires passion, commitment and having a business savvy mindset. It might seem like I get new clothes every other day or go on lots of trips etc but It’s all part of my job and it’s been a long time in the making – 6 years to be exact. I think the key to starting your own business or making money on your own is that you have to absolutely love what you do.

I live and breathe blogging, I’ve pretty much worked everyday for nearly 2 years now and that’s the kind of commitment we’re talking about here. This post isn’t going to tell you how to get rich quick and I’m not saying you’ll be earning millions in 6 years time (although you might?!). What I am saying though, is that if you work your ass off doing something you love, in time you’ll be able to make a living out of it.

I think having the freedom and power to control my own working life is so important to me – I was always disheartened when working for other companies and businesses. I like to do things my own way and now I’m happy when I wake up every morning.

Create Something

I get inspired by other entrepreneurs, anyone who’s taking a risk on an awesome idea with passion and belief is someone I look up to. We’re offering the world something that it didn’t know it needed and I think that’s something really special. What you want to do, whatever your idea, however crazy it may be I think the first thing is believing in yourself. A lot of people laughed at me when I said I wanted to do this full time and a lot of people are still shocked that this is my full time job and that I quit my job at one of the most prestigious luxury e-commerce websites in the world to do it. You have to provide something that people want, whether it’s a product, a platform or a service – just create something.

Utilise your skills

After you have your idea, then comes the fun part. Business planning, branding, forecasting, trial and error etc Use your skills to communicate your idea wholeheartedly to the best of you ability. Diagrams, Graphs, projections, future ideas, where will your business be in 5 years time? Really think hard about what your skills are and how you can use them to the best of your ability.

My skill I guess is my love for styling, finding new brands, experimenting with my style and most importantly image creation – I have a vision in my head of what I want something to look like and even though I’m not officially a ‘photographer’ or a ‘model’ me and my friends can produce more stylised, aesthetically pleasing content on our own with a tripod than a lot of brands can in months and I produce this on a regular basis. Whilst simultaneously chatting to you guys about everything that’s going on. I like to think being a nice human being is also one of my skills because it allows me to talk to every single person that asks me a question about my outfits, blogging etc. So whatever you have at your disposal from things like illustration, graphic design to even just being good at talking to people. Utilise whatever skills you have to the best of your ability.

It’s Who You Know

I know the title of this post implies that you’ll be on your own but guess what – you’re not. Other people are integral to any business, whether they’re your customer, your reader, business associate or your friends. My friends have been the biggest help in the world with me and my blog, from helping me shoot my outfit pictures, being quiet when I’m recording a youtube video,  connecting me to the right people , celebrating with me during the highs and being there for me during the lows – without my friends I don’t think I’d be where I am today.

Friends, associates, readers are so so important, you might need an investor? you might need a factory? you might need some exposure?  You guys are what’s important to me, you take time out of your day to read my blog, you message me with questions and ask for advice and I’m so grateful – I’ve made some amazing friends so far even though you’re on the other side of the world.

Other people are what makes your ideas come to life so network like mad, put yourself out there, be a nice person and work hard. It will all work out in the end as long as you give it all you’ve got.
