Guys are always asking me for tips and tricks on how to improve their style, I often find myself bored or unexcited with my wardrobe therefore I’m constantly looking at mens fashion, new styles, new ideas and experimenting with them. I think it’s human nature to want to refine your own personal style, everyone has their signature looks or pieces. It’s not about getting rid of those but more about enhancing them to be the best version of you. It’s all about self confidence and feeling good in what you wear. I have a process when it comes to sorting out my style and think it could come in handy if you find yourself stuck in a bit of a rut with your own wardrobe.

Shop my look

Research

Scour the internet, raid the stores, filter through Instagram – look in every possible places that inspires you. When you get inspired you’ll know it straight away, you’ll be intrigued by a certain look, a designer, a collection maybe just a pair of sneakers. Make a mood board of your favourite things, gathering them all in one place will help you to visualise exactly what you like. You can see some of my inspirations here.

Clear Out

I’m constantly doing this, due to the nature of my job but I have a lot of clothing so its really necessary. Even before I started my blog I always had clear outs – they’re really therapeutic to me, I like to get rid of things that I don’t wear anymore and things that I’ve never worn. Once you’re done you can either give your unwanted clothes to friends, charity or even sell them on Depop. (You can check out my Depop here).

Essentials

They may be boring to purchase but that expensive pair of perfect denim jeans or black T-shirt will help strengthen your wardrobe and hopefully last you for years. Invest in good quality clothing that fits well. Sure it might be expensive but if you wear it every day then the cost per wear (I heard this term from Victoria from Inthefrow and I can’t stop saying it) makes you see how much it’s really worth to you.

Re-Invent

Have you got some old pieces that you’d like to wear but you’re not sure just how to wear them? Re-inventing older pieces of your wardrobe is cost effective and can be really exciting. This pair of denim I’m wearing for example. they’re an old pair of Represent Biker Denim jeans that I didn’t wear much anymore so I decided to heavily distress them and hey presto, I’ve given them a new lease of life. I’ve got a DIY idea for old flannel shirts that you can check out here.

Shop

Shopping is the next step, take all of your inspiration and find pieces that look good on you. If you are unsure of items then maybe go in store to try them on but having said that you can always return online orders. I would say think of this in your head whilst shopping ‘ Buy Less, Choose Well’. It’s much more beneficial to buy one piece that will last you a long time and can be worn with everything in your wardrobe rather than buying cheaper trend pieces that you wont be wearing in a few weeks time. I regularly update the curated shop section of my blog here which you can head to for some inspiration.

Experiment

Try new shapes and styles, things that you’ve never worn before. You never know, you could find your new favourite style of t shirt or jeans. I’m experimenting here in this post by wearing two of the same flannel shirts, inspired by the Barneys x Purpose Tour merch (here) and I really like how it turned out. The actual shirts were around $500 each so I got my alternatives from Topman and still achieved a similar result. Proving that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to achieve the style that you like.

Be Confident

Confidence is key to how you dress, if you feel good in your outfit then it shows to everyone else. I often dress a lot for comfort because I want to feel relaxed in what I’m wearing. I think of clothing as an extension of your personality, so just have fun with it and don’t take it too seriously. Once you find an outfit that you love and feel great in you’ll see just how it affects your day.
