How to Style Minimalism
Photography by Robin James
I’ve always been obsessed with minimalism, for the past couple of years it’s something that I’ve been trying to achieve in all areas of my life. Scandinavian style, clean silhouettes, textures and simple cuts make for an inspiring ensemble. Although it seems quite difficult to achieve minimalism it’s actually relatively simple. Less is definitely more and it’s the attention to detail that really shines through in these kinds of outfits.
This whole look was built around the H&M Jacket, its’ sheer complexity inspired me to keep everything else simple, adding the straight leg cropped jeans with the sports socks to give it a more streetwear element. I feel like there’s a lot of detail in this outfit that could easily be overlooked if you just walked past it on the street – from the platform sneakers to the silver rings. When looking at minimalism its important to keep things subtle yet interesting.
The H&M jacket is from their new Studio collection which is new to the Menswear section, It’s a heavy duty rough textured Suede with a clean utility style. I wore it over a longline T-Shirt from Topman, the distressed cropped ASOS jeans which give a straight leg silhouette, striped socks and platform sneakers. My advice to dressing more minimal(ly) would be to pick one focus piece of an outfit and use the rest of the outfit to tone it down – kind of like balance. Since I hardly ever wear bright colours I knew that the rest of the outfit had to be one solid colour to keep everything in check.
